Brother XL-3200 vs Viking Emerald 183

I am often asked what is/are the major differences and similarities in features between the Brother XL-3200 and the Viking Emerald 183. These are the standout features that give the Viking its highly regarded reputation. Of course, there are other added bonuses in the Viking machine, but these are not features that I use enough to boast.

Differences

Manual vs. Digital
Let us start by saying the major difference in these two machines other than the wide berth between their sticker prices, is that the Viking Emerald 183 is a digital machine that does all of the optimization of your stitch lengths/widths for you. It is not a perfect calibration; for at times the fabric weight causes you to make a few tweaks in the stitch length/width. However, the display on the digital read out makes the task easier. It even tells you what presser foot to use to carry out your project and where to best position your needle. Additionally, all functions carried out by the Viking are visible on the display monitor.

Embroidery Stitches
The Viking Emerald 183 has an immense selection of embroidery stitches. Some of these stitches work great in unison to form some unique detail on your fabric. From basic to more intricate, the machine makes fuss-free movements without the need of a hoop. The Brother displays its total limit in stitches.

Speed Control
The Viking varied speed controls allow you to manage the power under your needle and your foot on the pedal. The Brother's only speed control is in your foot applying pressure to the pedal.

Press and Go Button Reverse Stitch
You do not have to hold a button to complete this maneuver on the Viking. You simply press the button and go back to guiding your fabric. Depress when you want to return to forward stitching.

Classic
The Brother XL-3200 is such a brand/model classic that it joins a legion of other classical machines in sparing out interchangeable presser feet among the machines. These feet are so inexpensive because of their interchangeability that manufacturers are practically giving them away.

You can find them in Walmart, EBay, or aliexpress.

Similarities

Sew Simple.

They both sew.  It is as simple as that.  As you may recall, when I needed to replace my presser foot ankle on the Viking, the Brother did a remarkable job of pinch-hitting.  I even made about four bathing suits with it while I waited for the ankle to deliver.  The Brother sat on the shelf for all of time the Viking functioned as the main workhorse.  Since it served me so well during my time of need, I could not imagine storing it again.  Now, it no longer subs as a back up in time of desperation, but is a major function in the manufacturing of Beauty of Creating, daily.

Automatic Needle Threader.

They both carry this feature.  I remember when I first purchased the Brother over 17 years ago, I barely used this feature.  With great lighting and younger eyes, I deferred to the old-fashion do-it-yourself way of threading a needle.  I defaulted to this so much that the needle threader required a little oil to move when I actually needed its function.

Accessories on Deck.

Both machines fancy additional accessories, like presser feet, screw drivers, and other multi-functioning tools.

Clean as You Go.

Machines need maintenance.  The higher the machine, the more expensive is the maintenance.  Oiling and dusting keep these machines working like new.  Proper care will extend the life and reduce maintenance/repair costs.

***

For me, they go hand-in-hand.  Together, they reduce construction time by minimizing the need to change threads.  I am able to move effortlessly from one to the other which makes efficient, those projects requiring two thread colors.

Orange You Glad...

It is Summer?

I am not complaining...at all.  I had all of the windows open. The breeze was hearty.  I wanted to take an early nap so badly.  But I could not. Because during this photo shoot on the patio, I accidentally let in a fly.

This fly was never going to allow me a peaceful rest. In exchange for my cross breeze, I trapped it in the window when it landed on the screen.

Beginners Embroidery Journal #2

I am excited to embroider despite the mini struggle I am having with the manual. Here is the 63 Brother color set ordered from Amazon!  It was a time sensitive purchase.  It came with a large sheet of stabilizer, along with a bonus of seven bobbins-one threaded in black and one threaded in white.

I was just expecting 63 spools and you know I counted them!  But the extra's feel like a lottery win!

My start was pretty cool!  I practiced fastening fabric into the hoop and lining it accurately to placement.

And yet, this is all I have to show you...

In the interim, I contacted the support line at Brother Embroidery, and they informed me that cassettes/cards are really outdated.  Therefore to even access the IBROIDERY.COM freebies I must invest in a software application.

Decisions.

Certainly I do plan to create my own designs and this is probably when I will ease towards making that investment.  I really do not want to jump into the shallow end, aiming for low cost that eventually will not serve my greater purpose.

Until next time...

What Happened to Spring?

Many of my loyal subscribers and fans of Beauty of Creating inquired about the Spring/Summer Catalog for 2017.  Let me tell you that it is coming to the internet by next week.  The delay is not due to a limited showcase, but a robust one.

I have so much that there may be a bonus page.

In the meantime, the girls from the Journey Girl Limited Edition Collection I showed you in an earlier post are finally getting to showcase their adorableness. This doll reminds me so much of the actress Hayden Panettiere that I decided Hayden was the perfect name for her!

Here is Hayden showcasing "Country Chic".  This dress is another reproduction of one of my favorite 'adult' dresses.  Hayden wears it in yellow with pink roses. Included is a distressed denim vest, pink crocs, and a matching tote!

This item will be available soon on EBay, but is available for direct sale today! Contact me for more details!

Welcome Journey Girls, Kyla and Callie

Toys R Us has a mission it seems.  Recently their Journey Girls have reached incredibly low prices and I am not one to let events like this pass me by, especially since two Journey Girls evaded my collection.

Without further delay, Beauty of Creating welcomes Kyla (l), from the 2015 Italy Collection and Callie (r), from the 2016 New York Collection.

I love both Kyla's and Callie's starter outfit.  This means that I am in no hurry to discard their arrival dressings.  They can remain dressed until at least late summer.  I am sure however by Fall they will model Beauty of Creating designs. They do remind me just how much I need to order more doll stands.

I have to say that these two are truly dolls after my own heart.  Kyla is an artist, of Latina descent, while Callie, a fashion guru of biracial Latina/Asian mix, represent cultural and lifestyle experiences of which I am very passionate.

Stay tuned to see future designs and photo shoots, as Beauty of Creating features these two beautiful dolls!

One of My Greatest Challenges

My greatest challenge to overcome were sleeves!

Yes. Indeed. Sleeves.

I remember when I first started drafting patterns for doll clothing, sleeves challenged me so much that I practically tried to avoid them.  Now, I am not saying that buttons/buttonholes and zipper applications came easy.  They challenged me as well.  However, I quickly mastered those events with the help of my early sewing days using commercial patterns.

But sleeves, there was only installation instruction, not instruction on designing an original.  Let me tell you that in the short while I claim victory, custom sleeves do not resemble those sleeves in commercial patterns.

A sleeve to set in a shirt or dress, but does not seem to match the dimensions of the arm that expects to wear it.  The first thing you say to yourself after articulating a sleeve pattern is "this cannot be right".  You will tell yourself this to the point that you will ease into the application with much trepidation.

Trust, minus adding the space for sewing the seams to join the sleeve to the garment, you will shout victory!

Riley Blake Knit Polo Dress (Navy/Lavender)
Say so long to huge sleeves that look like they derived from commercial patterns, as you guessed/estimated them to fit your doll/model arm.  And say hello to fitted sleeves that earn your trust in construction, over and over again!

Bedroom Beginnings

With more to come, here is a view of the first set.  I admit, as a lover of adult-sized bed linens, the overwhelming rush of ideas caught me by surprise.  Thanks to the Trundle Bed, I brought to life two different options for the sheet sets.

I enjoyed every aspect of this.  This set is way more intricate and expanded than the Barbie sets from 2005.  I usually do this for baby blankets.

As a bonus, the addition of decals for the side board gave this a personal touch.  I found the decals at the Dollar Tree.  I could not apply the entire decal panel, but "dream" stood out!

It fits the theme perfectly!
