Flashback Friday

Could this be Journey Girl Chavonne? I definitely think so!  

Watching series, "Bitten" and who do I see in Season 3, Episode 7? None other than Journey Girl Chavonne.  Earlier in the episode, I found my eyes landing on the back view of the doll.  I was not sure what doll it was, but it had my attention, as most dolls do!

Later on, I was able to screen capture this photo!  
This episode was aired in 2016, likely taped as early as 2015!  What happened in 2015?  Beauty of Creating launched it's Journey Girl Doll Collection!  

From the featured cameo, Chavonne is dressed in clothes that do no appear to be from an original ensemble, but could be from a collection of clothes sold separately.  

Our Journey Girl Dolls have been everywhere! I searched the internet to see if Journey Girl Chavonne has a television credit on the series.  So far, the search is void.  I still think it's pretty cool!

Journey Girls: Japan Tour Tribute

Inspiration comes in many forms.  Although Toys 'R' Us (US) folded, the Journey Girl friends continue living their best doll life, touring the globe.  In Summer 2018, Journey Girls stamped Japan in their passports.

From its temples of Kyoto, to the main entertainment district of Osaka, to the ski resorts of Hokkaido, to the gardens of Tokyo, to the hot springs of Nagano, and the 320 km/h bullet train, no wonder our Journey Girls unanimously selected Japan for its 2018 tour!

To honor TRUs selection, Beauty of Creating has selected an event that will showcase Journey Girls in an authentic tradition! Our Journey girls will take in the sites by day and dine on sushi, tempura, and ramen by night!

TRU KIDS - the Revisioning

I cannot tell you how excited I am to see the return of the Toys R Us brands and their respective partners, Geoffrey the Giraffe and Babies R Us.  Launched in January 2019, the TRU KIDS BRANDS, a new company, emerged from the ashes of King of Toy Stores - Toys R Us.  

Boasting a new vision and leadership, TRU KIDS BRANDS promises fans will see its products reappear in US stores by Christmas 2019.

What excites me most is that our beloved JOURNEY GIRLS appeared as a beloved brand!!!  

As a collector and stylist, I am happy for both myself and other consumers.  I hope those remissed will get to enjoy the love we Journey Girl fans have shared for years, and get to finally appreciate just how special the girls truly are!

There are a few things that I would love to see revisioned/returned: 

1. Chavonne's Curly mane...I love it and it seems many of the questions that I comprise from consumers is "who is that beautiful curly haired doll".  Bring back curly Chavonne!  Keep both curly and wavy options.

2. Callie's full hairline.  The bangs are okay, but they can be created. 

3. Make Dana's hair more wavy.  Of all of the girls, her hair is the most resistant to styling.  Help her!!!

4. Kelsey's freckles - pronounce them please!

American Girl Doll Clothes by B.O.C.

Lately, I have received a message inquiring if we design for the American Girl Dolls in my eStores.  We are open to direct sell customers, who would like a personal design by Beauty of Creating.  You may take a look at our Journey Girl Collections and message us for direct sell inquiries here, IG, Pinterest, or Facebook. 

We are considering offering a few options this year based on the highest demand of inquiry for our Journey Girl Dolls.  If the support returns favorable, we will be inspired to design more.

Journey Girl Dolls were and remain the flagship doll of support, despite their reduced inventory worldwide as a result of the liquidation of Toys 'R Us (TRU-US).  When we launched a tiny collection of clothes (Dec 2015), this doll inspired us like no other.  We were excited because we believed in Chavonne and this lead to us building a complete collector's haul. The support was tremendous, inspiring us to continue.  We did major investments towards gaining TRU some support for their Journey Girl Dolls.  We reached out to family and friends. We  pushed even harder in the 2016 and 2017, to very little return of interest.  Only a handful wanted the doll.  Many who said the price was too high turned to the AG doll that costs 3x the points of Journey Girl's.

The Journey Girl doll retailed at $40 at TRU.  When I began a partnership with TRU, I tracked and reported any and all sales on the dolls.  Very often the dolls dipped significantly to half price.  Smart shoppers stocked them high for future sale.  Those dolls immediately began to disperse at typical retail matched prices until the company released bankruptcy and dissolving their US stores.  The online/private sell prices began to increase due to the impending shortened supply.

I remain invested in the Journey Girl Doll.  Although I do not purchase at the same rate of past, I still collect these dolls.  I love sewing for them, dressing them, styling for them, and taking their photos.  Journey Girl Dolls keep me busy and they keep me inspired!  I have so much in store for them. I get goose-bumps just thinking about what is next! 

With that said, I am open to direct sell customers only who desire styles by Beauty of Creating for any doll of 18" that I can access.

In 2015, I shared a prospective observation with my family and friends on social media.  I even took along a camera phone, posting what I had observed to be a shortage on Journey Girl Doll/Chavonne (Toys 'R' Us).

Begging the world to please buy this doll because it appeared she would not be present for long, Chavonne at that time, sported beautiful bouncing curls.

By 2016 the transition was set.  No one who I personally knew headed this message.  Chavonne was reintroduced in the summer of '16 with long wavy hair, much looser curls.  I followed my own advice and by the time 'curly Chavonne' was discontinued, I had amassed 6, from not only Toys 'R' Us, but also from eBay merchants.

Trip to Italy 2015-1016

For whatever reason, few took the $40 tag as too much, but then later acquired the American Girl dolls at $115.  

Fall 2017, when the first sign of despair to what evolved into store closings, I knew something detrimental was in flight.  I decided to offer the Journey Girl Chavonne in a raffle.  One person purchased a ticket and for $5 received a bounty just in time for Christmas, delivering it as a gift.  I continued to acquire more dolls, mainly the Chavonne, and a few more people took interest, but nothing significant.  Sadly, this was the moment that many customers began to finally realize that Curly Chavonne was gone for good and thus began making ridiculously low offers on the doll or asking if the doll was included in the outfit package.

2016

2017

I still continued posting the urgency of acquiring Journey Girls.  

By late Winter 2018, the fear of bankruptcy loomed and Toys 'R' Us dropped a list of definite store closures.  Again, I continued to pounce on what seemed scarily like the end.  

I decided to make another attempt to get Chavonne (and the JG dolls) movement into homes of family and friends.  Several customers purchased the doll in conjunction with the "Graduation 2018" pack.

By early Spring 2018, the news of Toys 'R' Us shutting down its entire business delivered.  I visited stores, advising customers in passing, to focus on the "Geoffrey" brands, items exclusive to the merchant.  

Australia 2017-2018

As the final ads show a huge thrust towards what is the end for a toy empire we all knew as a kid, smart shoppers have eroded the shelves of the brand items.  I considered paying another visit to stores in Westland, Livonia, and Novi and thus acquired the remaining dolls for the final adventure - Australia.

Close or Sell: Toys R Us failure to recover

I don't want to grow up...I don't want to change

Like a friend or a cherished memory of your childhood, we do not like to see children 'grow up' and 'change'.  However, the motto of "I don't want to grow up..." jingle that trademarked classic Toys R Us, the company appeared settled with not innovating and adapting to the dotcom era, they suffer for the lack of vision.

I will be okay.  A few partnerships and compliments over 10 years is hardly a reason to believe that I warrant a say in the decisions that go on at TRU.  But clearly, like so many other businesses that go under daily, you adapt or you cease to exist.

Major issues under my watch...

(1) Brokering a deal with AG and removing Journey Girls from over 250 stores.  The idea to recover debt with a doll commanding 3x the cost proved a fail

(2) Fading out the curly haired Chavonne instead of offering her as an option adjacent to the 'new' wavy one

(3) Lack of presence of dolls that identify with ethnic children...in other words "why are the African American Dolls" not in the store, limited, or hidden from customer view?

Add to that...the break from Amazon, the fail to launch/revive quickly post the failure of its own 'eToy' after its purchase of the latter.  Then there is leaving public trading to go private.

Sad events are underway for what seems like 800 stores and 30K employees.  The sky cracked and appeared to start dropping shards right before everyone else's eyes.  How is it that TRU did not see it in time to repair?

Forced bankruptcy to dissolve without terminating (responsibility to) employees

After 2006, a theory to consider is that TRU drove their train off the tracks...a self-inflicted gun shot to the heart.  The best way to erode yourself of responsibility to deliver pink slips is to sit on the coffers, buy debt, pay no one...kick the can down the road until the banks calls in your loans.

Maybe that is a harsh thing to say, but if the visual aesthetics for what a store should look like under liquidation holds, TRU has only come to begin to look like they are trying in the same week they marched in with a surrender flag to wave.

That told a story.  TRU never really appeared as a guy working to pay its debt.  The sales remained slow and customers waited as long as they could.  Yesterday I went to a store looking for Chavonne's and only walked out with a Wonder Woman Action Figure along with a Finding Dory watch.  The store is starting to look like  it is trying to move merchandise, but it is not fooling the wise.

Looking ahead

Whatever side the company lands, we will adjust.  We will hopefully use its lesson to teach ourselves about our own personal and professional decisions.  Shopping great deals is likely, but when and where?  Will the online be the place to shop those deals?  I remember when BFC Ink dolls were no longer because I missed its entire evolution.  I did hear that the dolls dropped in price significantly and folks swooped in to hoard and sell higher to match customer demand and few products to choose.

We hope that smart employees have options and those who leveraged the benefits may emerge in a better place.
