Barber Shop Stop & Rafael's Unboxing/Review
I did promise to do a review on Rafael, the Our Generation Boy Doll that I recently adopted. As promised that is forthcoming. I noticed that the calendar reads a lot going on in the next few weeks and these boys need a formal introduction in Beauty of Creating Style!
Rafael and MyPal the Patroit "Josh" will add to the pattern collection of Beauty of Creating. Their bodies are not congruent with our Journey Girls and we are okay with that!
The weather is warming, along with Spring's debut, and soon the boys of summer will be kicking off their 2018 season. Look for the boys to join the Tigers on Opening Day!
To get them ready for pattern designs and fittings, we wanted to give them a great start, by nothing other than a visit to the barber chair! The ladies are always getting primped and curled and we did not want the guys to feel unappreciated.
Here is Rafael...
When Rafael delivered he, as I anticipated did not look exactly like the rendering in the ad. His face, thinner, his clothes a little tighter, and his hair quite long.
Let's start there, because his hair was by far the first challenge I wanted to master. Based on previews, Rafael's hair is gelled down and not in a good way. First order of business, wash!
After conditioning and towel drying I was able see how much hair he was actually working with, thus the scissors worked well to reduce much of the bulk and do a preliminary cut and style. His hair would fair better for cutting when dry than wet. He still had far too much hair but after drying it completely overnight, it was to the barber chair for a major trim and clip!
Using two guards, the #2 first and then reduced to the #1, the blades retracted to base. He still wears more on top, but now the shape completely alters his face appearance giving it a fuller look!
Beauty of Creating introduces Raphael, from the Our Generation Collection (TARGET) |
Taking Rafael's measurements, his waist is an inch larger. Before we can get him dressed in B.O.C. designs we definitely need to draft new patterns that compliment his physique.
Seeing both Rafael and "Josh" it validates to me why we are not fond of the American Girl Dolls, notably the girls. Their shoulders are very broad and masculine, more fitting for boys.
Rafael's packaged ensemble is not bad, but you will likely not see him in it again. His clothes are functional, but quite unflattering. Before I can move to "Josh", Rafael's needs take precedence.
Rafael's torso is completely soft, much like AG dolls. His eyes appear blue-green, though many collectors suggest gray.
We are quite excited for both of our male models and what BOC has in store for them. Look forward to these guys in our Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter Collections 2018!

Unboxed...Wonder Woman (Shield Block)
Hi Friends!
On a recent visit to Toys R Us, which was unfortunately not a success for picking up Chavonne, turned out to be a decent hit for action figures. What I discovered on this shopping adventure is that customers were spot on when they said TRU is overpriced.
The original posted price for Wonder Woman (Shield Block) was $19.95. I made the purchase at $10 (about 40% off) which is probably in the wheelhouse of the Walmart's at $11.
On with the unboxing...
This doll is amazing!
As a kid, I never owned a Wonder Woman action figure. I am not even sure they drafted one. But this one is uber cool. When the movie dropped into the theaters, a huge collection of Wonder Woman/Diana Prince dolls appeared. This segment of figures includes: Diana Prince & Hidden Sword, Bow-Wielding Wonder Woman, and Wonder Woman Battle Ready.
Her costume is fabulous. Parts of it is molded to her body, like the breast plate and the under pantie. She adorns a sword and shield, and stuns with action poses where her shield raises to block her face.
She is an attractively sculpted doll with soft brown hair fashioning her signature headband.

I cannot promise you this is the last purchase of WW action figures, especially with TRU's departure sales on the rise.

Close or Sell: Toys R Us failure to recover
I don't want to grow up...I don't want to change
Like a friend or a cherished memory of your childhood, we do not like to see children 'grow up' and 'change'. However, the motto of "I don't want to grow up..." jingle that trademarked classic Toys R Us, the company appeared settled with not innovating and adapting to the dotcom era, they suffer for the lack of vision.
I will be okay. A few partnerships and compliments over 10 years is hardly a reason to believe that I warrant a say in the decisions that go on at TRU. But clearly, like so many other businesses that go under daily, you adapt or you cease to exist.
Major issues under my watch...
(1) Brokering a deal with AG and removing Journey Girls from over 250 stores. The idea to recover debt with a doll commanding 3x the cost proved a fail
(2) Fading out the curly haired Chavonne instead of offering her as an option adjacent to the 'new' wavy one
(3) Lack of presence of dolls that identify with ethnic children...in other words "why are the African American Dolls" not in the store, limited, or hidden from customer view?
Add to that...the break from Amazon, the fail to launch/revive quickly post the failure of its own 'eToy' after its purchase of the latter. Then there is leaving public trading to go private.
Sad events are underway for what seems like 800 stores and 30K employees. The sky cracked and appeared to start dropping shards right before everyone else's eyes. How is it that TRU did not see it in time to repair?
Forced bankruptcy to dissolve without terminating (responsibility to) employees
After 2006, a theory to consider is that TRU drove their train off the tracks...a self-inflicted gun shot to the heart. The best way to erode yourself of responsibility to deliver pink slips is to sit on the coffers, buy debt, pay no one...kick the can down the road until the banks calls in your loans.
Maybe that is a harsh thing to say, but if the visual aesthetics for what a store should look like under liquidation holds, TRU has only come to begin to look like they are trying in the same week they marched in with a surrender flag to wave.
That told a story. TRU never really appeared as a guy working to pay its debt. The sales remained slow and customers waited as long as they could. Yesterday I went to a store looking for Chavonne's and only walked out with a Wonder Woman Action Figure along with a Finding Dory watch. The store is starting to look like it is trying to move merchandise, but it is not fooling the wise.
Looking ahead
Whatever side the company lands, we will adjust. We will hopefully use its lesson to teach ourselves about our own personal and professional decisions. Shopping great deals is likely, but when and where? Will the online be the place to shop those deals? I remember when BFC Ink dolls were no longer because I missed its entire evolution. I did hear that the dolls dropped in price significantly and folks swooped in to hoard and sell higher to match customer demand and few products to choose.
We hope that smart employees have options and those who leveraged the benefits may emerge in a better place.

Toys R Us...up to 50% off
The liquidation continues. I went into my local store and I promise you that if there was no prior knowledge of a store closing you would think it was a typical shopping day--you could count the people in there. The shelves were bulging with toys and the sales did not amount to anything close to 40%.
And here we are today, receiving an email that the liquidation clearance rises to 50% off.
And here we are today, receiving an email that the liquidation clearance rises to 50% off.
With that said, if there is a liquidation going on, someone needs to tell Toys "R" Us stores, namely the one in Ann Arbor.
I did notice that Journey Girl Dolls returned, and are following the online 30% off. I am so disappointed that this sale started the day after my courtesy expired.
I will check back sometime in the next two weeks. But right now, they have a long way to go to even think they will have buyers inside.
